Three inmate heroes save a guard’s life
I feel like we don’t get enough feelgood stories from jails and prisons. This one comes from Gwynett County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia. The deputy on duty was feeling poorly all day and lost consciousness all of a sudden. The deputy officer fell on the concrete floor and split his head open. He started bleeding and no doubt that would’ve been it for the man. But the inmates who were close enough to see what was happening started banging on their cell doors and shouting out his name. Soon enough the whole block started making noise and the deputy actually woke up worried one of the inmates needed help. He stayed conscious long enough to open the cell doors. Walter Whitehead, Mitchell Smalls and Terry Loveless immediately ran to help him and call for help.
The three inmates reacted quickly
The three heroes used the deputy’s phone and radio to call for help and thus saved his life. Help arrived promptly and took him to the hospital. After all the stereotypes of the bad-blood relationships between inmates and guards in jails and prisons, we get one of these stories. Movies don’t really help with their portrayal of the prison life either. But feelgood stories like these can open our eyes and teach us to think more broadly. Not only was the deputy worried enough to open cell doors without being afraid for his life, but the inmates returned the favor by calling for help. The three inmate heroes have become an instant hit in the county.
